DIEGO ESCOLANO
Diego uses to play a wide range of instruments in his concerts; from traditional to early music ones. Here you a have a selection with short video samples.
Instruments
Dulzaina and traditional oboes
Usually known as "gaita" in Aragón, it is a wide bore short oboe. Traditionally played with the suport of a drum, it is widely played in all the festivities in our country. Diego uses to play low-pitched traditional oboes as gaita de Ribagorza and tarota and renaissance shawm as well.
This couple is the Aragonese version of the tabor pipes in wich rhythmic section is in charge of the salterio, a stringed drum. This instrument has only remained in use in a few villages of the northern pyrenaic mountains, in both Aragonese an Occitan sides, despite its extensive practice in the surroundings of the crown of Aragón during the Rennaisance.
Chiflo y salterio
Gaita de boto
The gaita de boto is the Aragonese bagpipe. Morphologically, it is a relative of the French cornemuses. Traditionally it has been used to play dance music (especially Morris dances). Traditional chanters preserve ancient melodic modes in its natural scales. He also occasionally plays in concert another type of bagpipes like French 16 inch cornemuse du centre or Galician bagpipe
in Aragón we have a wide variety of plucked string instruments. Diego plays many of them, as the Laud (an Aragonese cittern) or small guitars as the Guitarrico. He also plays the guitar in the traditional manner, that actually is an echo of the baroque rasgueo technique.
Traditional string instruments
Vihuela and historical guitars
As a consequence of its interests in traditional string instruments and early music, Diego also uses historical plucked strings as the baroque guitar, the romantic guitar or the vihuela.
From medieval to late baroque the recorder has played a relevant role in Western music. Different musical periods played in different instruments from Pythagorean tuned recorders, Ganassi based flutes... to French flutes-de-voix or even contemporary Helder and Paetzold models that offer a wide range of musical ambiances.
